The Law Regarding Use of Pesticides

The Plant Protection Products (Sustainable Use) Regulations 2012 requires everyone who uses Plant Protection Products (PPPs) authorised for professional use, to have a spray operator certificate. In addition, anyone purchasing PPPs authorised for professional use must ensure that the intended end user has a certificate.

We offer a range of pesticide training courses that cover the use and application of professional products on agricultural or other land.

All spray operators must sit a ‘Safe Use of Pesticides’ unit. This is a one-day theory course which covers current legislation, correct storage and disposal of pesticides and dealing with contamination incidents. This is followed by an assessment. BMR provides the City and Guilds NPTC PA1 assessment. This must be passed before you can take any other PA units.

Following this, operators take units relating to the type of sprayer to be used. The most common are:

PA2: Required to operate mounted or trailed boom sprayers. PA2F covers weed wipers

PA4G/PA4S: Required for the use of a granular or slug pellet applicator respectively.

PA6: Required for applying pesticides using a hand-held (knapsack) applicator (BMR provides training and testing for other pesticide applicators, please ask)

(The above refer to NPTC qualifications)

Qualification guidance can be found on the City & Guilds website.

In Scotland training material is based on the Scottish Code of Practice for Pesticide Use 2006.

In England & Wales refer to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Code of practice for using plant protection products.
