City & Guilds NPTC Level 2 Award in the Transport of Animals by Road (Short Journeys)

Farmers, livestock and equine hauliers who transport animals as a business or trade are required by Law to protect the welfare of animals during transport. Welfare during transport is enforced by local councils and trading standards officials carry out welfare checks on animals and means of transport while the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) carries out checks at markets.

The guidance states if your business transports livestock further than 65km (40m) where journey times are less than 8 hours, you must hold:

• a certificate of competence for animal transport; then you must apply to the APHA for a…

• a valid transporter authorisation for short journeys

Certificates of competence are issued for different classes of livestock. BMR can organise your assessment through NPTC; it takes the form of a one-hour, computer-based multiple-choice test which is held at the Earlston office.

For those transporting longer distances with journeys of over 8 hours, there are further requirements (contact BMR directly for further details).

Advice and guidance can be found at the UK government website here.
