GOVERNMENT MAKES U-TURN ON TAXATION OF PICK-UPS

The Government has performed a U-turn over its decision to treat double cab pick-ups as cars for taxation purposes – a move that would have affected thousands of farmers across the country.

The proposed changes, that were to come into force from 1 July 2024, stated that all double cabs with a payload of one tonne or more would be treated as cars rather than goods vehicles for both capital allowances and benefit-in-kind purposes. This would have closed a tax ‘loophole’ and would have resulted in a significant hike in tax charges for pickups, which would have been based on their high carbon dioxide emissions.

However, following a backlash from farmers and the motor industry, the Government has decided to withdraw the new guidance saying that it would not be in line with its wider aims to support businesses, “including vital motoring and farming industries”.

The change means that double cab pick-ups will continue to be treated as goods vehicles rather than cars, and businesses and individuals can continue to benefit from their lower levels of taxation.
