Sandystones, Ancrum

With his wife Philippa, son Hugo, and daughter-in-law Jess Guy Lee farms at Sandystones, near Jedburgh. The 240 hectares farm grows combinable crops of wheat, winter and spring barley, oilseed rape and oats and 500 head of Angus sired cattle are bought annually as stores and finished on a combination of grazed grass and a TMR ration.

Additionally, 35 hectares are farmed organically with 8000 hens in four mobile 2000 bird sheds  laying eggs for Waitrose. Another 15 hectares of organic oats are grown for milling.  

Guy also publishes Agrimart, a monthly magazine produced for the farming community, mailed free of charge to 6000 farms and rural businesses from York to Aberdeen. And in 2022 the Sandystones Treehouse was opened providing holiday accommodation in a unique setting.

The Lee family moved to the Borders in 1991 with three young children. Today it is Hugo who runs the business having taken over the management in 2017. But Guy still helps out at busy times, spraying the farm’s crops as well as for two of the neighbours.

Guy is currently Chairman of Scottish Agronomy, established as a co-op it is Scotland’s leading agronomy advice service, growing an extensive network of independent trials for members as well as trials for commercial businesses. He is also past Chairman of BMR and has been a director for over 20 years.
